The company was founded in 1976. The company has been active in robotics, microelectronics, composite materials production, etc. Since 1994, it has been operating exclusively in the wind energy market. In 1995, the company began construction of its first wind farm.

On October 31, 2000, Gamesa listed its shares on the Madrid Stock Exchange. On April 24, 2001, the company's shares were included in the IBEX 35 index.

In 2010, the company ranked eighth in the world in terms of total annual wind energy equipment capacity – 2,587 MW. By the end of 2010, Gamesa had sold over 19,000 MW of wind turbines.

In July 2016, Siemens acquired a controlling stake in Gamesa (67%) for 1 billion euros and merged it with its wind turbine division. The deal was completed in April 2017.

The company is engaged in the design, construction and maintenance of onshore and offshore wind farms. As of early 2022, Siemens Gamesa was the world's second-largest wind turbine manufacturer and the fifth-largest wind energy company by revenue.

The company has factories in Brazil, the UK, Germany, Denmark, India, Spain, China, Morocco, the USA and Taiwan.

In Seville, Gamesa owns a factory for the production of photovoltaic cells with a capacity of 6 MW per year.

Gamesa produces industrial wind turbines with a power range from 850 kW to 2.0 MW. In 2009, the Gamesa G10x turbine with a capacity of 4.5 MW was developed.
